Cape Town Spurs reject Stellenbosch offer for highly-rated midfielder
Cape Town Spurs have rejected an offer from Stellenbosch FC for the services of highly-rated midfielder Chumani Butsaka ahead of the 2024/25 season.
The Urban Warriors were relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship after one season in the SA elite league.
CT Spurs gained promotion to the Betway Premiership at the start of the 2023/24 campaign after seeing off Maritzburg United and Casric Stars in the PSL Promotional/Relegation playoffs.
In the previous season, CT Spurs won six matches in the league, drew five, and lost 19 games. They collected 23 points, but this was not enough for them to survive relegation.
Despite being relegated to the second division, CT Spurs had exciting players in their ranks who have attracted interest from different Premiership clubs.
Butsaka has been one of the outstanding performers for the Cape Town-based side after featuring in 28 appearances across all competitions. The 22-year-old scored one goal in the colours of CT Spurs last season and provided three assists.
CAPE TOWN SPURS REJECTS 5 MILLION BID FOR BUTSAKA
With Stellies hot on the heels of Butsaka, FARPost understands that CT Spurs are not entertaining offers for their captain.
According to a source close to the developments, Stellenbosch offered around 5 million plus a 20% sell-on clause; however, it was not entertained.
“Stellenbosch have shown a big interest in Chumani Butsaka, but it looks like Spurs are trying to hold on to their best players,” a source said.
“After Spurs rejected the first offer, Stellenbosch came back and said the club must name their price for Butsaka, but they seem to be wanting to hold on to the Under-23 players because it’s part of the requirements to have players under the age of 23 in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
“Now it’s starting to feel like Butsaka is denied a move, and it has nothing to do with the offer because Stellenbosch is willing to play whatever the amount.”
