Percy Tau in Rulani Mokwena’s sights at Wydad
Wydad Casablanca, under the guidance of highly-rated SA coach Rulani Mokwena, are reportedly keen on bringing Bafana Bafana international Percy Tau to the club.
The Moroccan giants are believed to be exploring the possibility of securing the services of the Al Ahly attacker as Mokwena seeks to bolster his squad for the upcoming 2024/25 season.
Mokwena, who worked closely with Tau during their time together at Mamelodi Sundowns, is understood to be a huge admirer of the attacker’s talent and believes he could be a game-changer for Wydad.
The experienced attacker has entered the final year of his contract at Al Ahly and several media reports in Egypt linked Tau with a move away from the club.
Tau joined the Red Devils in 2021 under the then-head coach Pitso Mosimane from English Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion. Since his arrival at Al Ahly, Tau has won a handful of trophies which includes two successive CAF Champions League League titles in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns attacker also helped his side win their 44th league title in the ongoing 2023/24 campaign. In the current campaign, Percy Tau has made 33 appearances across all competitions and scored nine goals.
But his future in Cairo is in doubt following a reported falling out with the club’s head coach, Marcel Koller. Tau is said to have clashed with the Swiss manager over training ground conduct.
WHAT DID WYDAD CASABLANCA’S BOARD MEMBER SAY ABOUT PERCY TAU?
With Tau seemingly facing an uncertain future at the Egyptian giants, Wydad Casablanca board member Saad Al-Dreib says they would like to have a player of Tau’s experience.
“We are in a phase of renewing Wydad Casablanca’s squad, and we are looking for experience to replace those who have left, like Yahya Jabrane, Ayoub El Amloud, and Yahia Attiyat Allah. A player like Percy Tau, among others, is, of course, someone we are interested in signing.” Al Dreib said, as quoted by the Egyptian publication Kora Plus.
Meanwhile, Mokwena is faced with the daunting task of restoring Wydad’s dominance in Moroccan football and on the continent.
Wydad have faced financial challenges following the arrest of the club’s president, Said Naciri, on allegations of drug trafficking, forgery of official documents and usage of counterfeit cheques.
As a result, Wydad finished the 2023/24 campaign without winning any trophy and failed to qualify for the CAF Champions League next season after finishing sixth on the league table.
