Fadlu Davids’ impression of SA level of coaching compared to African countries

Following his time at Raja Casablanca and recent appointment as Simba SC head coach, Fadlu Davids has compared the level of coaching in South Africa to that of other African countries.

Former Maritzburg United mentor, Davids has already had three jobs outside the country. In 2022, he had a brief role as an assistant coach at Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow under Josef Zinnbauer.

He returned to SA and spearheaded Maritzburg United. After their relegation, his collaboration with Zinnbauer continued at Raja where they finished the season undefeated in all competitions, winning the Botola Pro League and Throne Cup.

Davids, now head coach at Simba, asserts that the level of coaching in South Africa is higher than generally perceived.

He emphasised that some PSL coaches possess a level of tactical expertise that surpasses that of their peers across Africa.

He highlighted the successes of Morena Ramoreboli and Pitso Mosimane as evidence of local coaching prowess. The former Orlando Pirates coach encourages South African coaches to seek opportunities abroad to broaden their experience.

FADLU DAVIDS’ MESSAGE TO SA COACHES

“I think it’s important for South African coaches to go out,” said Davids during the interview with FARPost.

“Coach Morena [Ramoreli] has shown it in Botswana. I’m not sure, if I’m not mistaken he has never been a head coach for the PSL team before.

“But he’s won two league titles and that’s an amazing achievement. Coach Pitso [Mosimane] paved the way for all of us, going to Al Ahly winning [multiple trophies]

“He won the league with Al Ahli in Saudi, promoted them. And now his experiences in the Emirates and again in Saudi.

“I think more coaches can go out because the level of coaching is quite high in South Africa.

“You’ll be surprised you come up in the PSL against the coach that does something tactically that you don’t see anywhere else, for example in Morocco.

“I think more coaches can expose themselves to this. I think this CAF A Licence presented by SAFA really helps. Coaches are qualified and are able to go out and coach.”
