Former Stellenbosch and Richards Bay defender lands new club
FARPost can confirm that former Stellenbosch FC and Richards Bay FC defender Sibusiso Mthethwa has joined Upington City FC in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
The 33-year-old was recently released by Richards Bay ahead of the new campaign. Mthethwa spent two seasons at the Natal Rich Boyz.
Last season, Mthethwa featured in 25 games across all competitions for the KwaZulu-Natal outfit. Overall, he played 44 matches in the two seasons he spent at Bay.
Mthethwa was not the only player who was released by the KZN side, as they look to compete this term after a disappointing finish last season where they had to fight to save their top-flight status in the PSL Promotional/Relegation Playoffs.
This was after the club finished in 15th place in the league after collecting 30 points from 30 outings.
WHO ARE THE OTHER PLAYERS RELEASED BY RICHARDS BAY ALONGSIDE SIBUSISO MTHETHWA?
The Natal Rich Boyz also let go of Malcolm Jacobs, Ntsako Makhubela and Tercious Malepe, Sanele Barns, Abdi Banda, Abel Mabaso, Jackson Mabokgwane, Boikanyo Komane, Katleho Makateng, and Khuda Muyaba.
Mthethwa previously represented teams such as Stellenbosch FC, AmaTuks, and the now-defunct teams Free State Stars and Platinum Stars.
With the talented centre-back having finalised his move to Upington in the SA football second tier, he is expected to help the team to challenge for automatic promotion to the Betway Premiership.
In the last term, they finished in position six on the Motsepe Foundation Championship log standings with 44 points. This was their first season in the National First Division after securing their promotion following their 2022/23 ABC Motsepe League National Playoffs triumph.
Upington will play their first match of the campaign against JDR Stars away from home on Saturday, 24 August 2024. The showdown will take place at Glant Stadium, with the kick-off set for 15:00.
