Hugo Broos shares his thoughts on Mailula’s move to Wydad Casablanca

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has shared his thoughts on Cassius Mailula’s transfer move to Wydad Casablanca for the 2024/25 season.

Mailula completed a move from USA-based outfit Toronto FC after struggling to cement a regular starting berth. The highly-rated attacker joined Toronto at the start of last season following an impressive showing at Mamelodi Sundowns.

In his breakthrough season at Sundowns, Mailula scored 15 goals and provided four assists in 31 appearances across all competitions. After impressing in the colours of Sundowns, Mailula only played eight matches for Toronto and scored three goals.

With the 23-year-old itching to bring his promising career back on track, he reunited with Rulani Mokwena in Morocco after the duo worked together at Downs.

WHAT DID HUGO BROSS SAY ABOUT MAILULA’S MOVE TO WYDAD CASABLANCA?

Mailula joined Wydad on a season-long loan with an option to make the deal permanent. Broos has admitted that the move could help the star return to the Bafana Bafana setup.

In the past 12 months, the Limpopo-born midfielder was a notable absentee in the Bafana team, missing the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

“I’m very happy with Mailula [moving to Wydad Casablanca], I was a little bit sad for him because he’s a guy that you give him a ball in the 18 area and he turns, it’s a goal,” Broos said.

“And he made a move to Toronto, I never understood why he went to Toronto with two Italian internationals [Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi]. Who was Mailula? He played 15 games in the PSL. It was a very bad move from his agent, so what happened? He didn’t play.

“So I’m very happy that he’s going to a coach that knows him very well, that’s another advantage and I think he’ll have more time you play, so hopefully we can see the old Cassius again.”
