Lucas Batteries power Jomo Cosmos’ promotion ambitions

Jomo Cosmos, a legendary South African football club currently competing in the ABC Motsepe League, has received a significant boost ahead of the 2024/25 season with a new sponsorship deal from Lucas Batteries.

‘Ezenkosi, as the club is affectionately known, has a storied history in South African football but has faced challenges in recent years, culminating in their relegation to the third tier in the 2021/22 campaign.

Club owner Jomo Sono remains determined to lead Cosmos back to the professional ranks, and this new sponsorship deal is a crucial step in that direction. Sono emphasised the importance of financial support for clubs competing in the lower divisions.

“In SAFA, clubs have to cover a lot of expenses, from referee fees to transportation costs,” said Sono. “Our players often come from far away, and we need to provide them with allowances for food, travel, and other necessities. This sponsorship from Lucas Batteries gives us the financial backing we need to support our players and pursue our goals.”

VT Batteries, led by managing director Darren McAlister, is a South African company dedicated to bringing batteries to the people.

With a focus on accessibility and distribution, VT Batteries has established itself as a key player in the battery industry over its 12-year history.

In 2016, VT Batteries secured the exclusive rights to distribute Lucas Batteries, a brand with a rich 140-year heritage spanning 150 countries. The partnership allows VT Batteries to leverage the Lucas brand’s reputation for quality and reliability. This further solidifies its commitment to providing customers with top-tier battery solutions.

McAlister believes their partnership with Cosmos ties into their vision as a company.

“We’re going to be sponsoring Jomo Cosmos. We’ve got this season. And we are going to see how it grows. We are going to see how it develops. We want to see ground-up growth with the academy. There’s a lot of opportunity we are going to get involved in as well,” McAlister said.

Cosmos finished fourth in the Gauteng ABC Stream last season, 11 points adrift of champions Dondol Stars.

Sono is confident they have a squad strong enough to challenge this season.
