Wedson Nyirenda makes interesting Bafana Bafana prediction

Despite Bafana Bafana’s draw against Uganda, Zambian gaffer Wedson Nyirenda is optimistic and has made an interesting prediction on Hugo Broos’ team.

Bafana Bafana left it late to force a 2-2 share of spoils against The Cranes of Uganda on Friday evening at Orlando Stadium in Soweto. Orlando Pirates midfielder Thalente Mbatha scored the goal that Bafana needed to avoid defeat, having been trailing behind until the 90th minute.

Burnley FC striker Lyle Foster scored Bafana Bafana’s first goal, while Denis Omeda and Rogers Mato scored for Uganda. South Africa will face South Sudan in their next match.

The former Kaizer Chiefs striker, Nyirenda has thrown his weight behind Bafana to excel beyond the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

Having won the bronze medal at the last AFCON edition, the former Baroka FC mentor believes Bafana are the only Southern Africa team strong enough to win the AFCON title.

“The AFCON qualifiers are already on the cards, and it will be a very busy week. Believe me, this will be a turning point for all teams. If you do well in the next two matches, you have the chance to qualify,” said Nyirenda.

“I feel and know that South Africa has made so much good progress under coach Hugo Broos. They can win AFCON. From the COSAFA region, they are better placed for that feat.

“They accounted well for themselves in the last edition, and I am optimistic that the Southern Africans will move a step ahead and can be among the finalists.”

They will now head to South Sudan for their second AFCON qualifier match on Tuesday, September 10.

Meanwhile, Uganda will host DR Congo the day before, on Monday, September 9, in another Group K Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
