Sekhukhune starts Confed Cup campaign with a defeat in Angola
Betway Premiership side Sekhukhune United started their 2024/25 CAF Confederation Cup with a narrow 1-0 defeat against Angola’s Lunda Sul FC on Saturday.
The hosts scored in stoppage time to clinch the victory to break the hearts of the visitors, who thought they had managed to seal a draw.
The two teams locked horns at Estadio 11 de Novembro in the second preliminary round, first leg. This is the first season Lunda are playing continental football after finishing third last season on the log. As for Sekhukhune it’s their second time.
Last season, Babina Noko ended their Confed Cup campaign in the group stages after amassing six points. They registered one victory, three draws and suffered two defeats.
Below are the talking points as Lunda stunned Sekhukhune 1-0.
LEHLOHONOLO SEEMA NOT ON THE BENCH
On Friday, SABC Sport confirmed that coach Lehlohonolo Seema didn’t travel with the team to Angola. He’s in Lesotho for his CAF A refresher coaching license. Senior coach Kaitano Tembo was in-charge alongside assistant coach Paulus Masehe.
Seema is expected to be back in the dugout when the Polokwane-based outfit open their 2024/25 Betway Premiership campaign on Wednesday against Magesi FC.
LLOYD KAZAPUA MAKES HIS SEKHUKHUNE DEBUT
Lloyd Kazapua finally made his Sekhukhune debut. The Namibian goalkeeper joined the club ahead of this season from another PSL side Chippa United.
In the previous match; in the MTN8 he sat on the bench whilst Ivory Coast goalie Badra Ali Sangare was the preferred choice in-between the sticks.
SEKHUKHUNE UNITED CAN’T KEEP A CLEANSHEET
The 1-0 defeat meant Babina Noko are yet to keep a cleansheet in the two matches they have played this season. In the MTN8 quarter-finals against Cape Town City FC, they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat.
The Confed Cup return leg will be played a week later on Saturday, September 21st in South Africa. Kickoff at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium is at 6pm.
