Municipality issue update on Peter Mokaba pitch following concerns

The Polokwane Municipality has assured football fans that the playing pitch at Peter Mokaba Stadium remains up to standard for its first Betway Premiership match after concerns during an MTN8 quarter-final match last month.

Sekhukhune United are set to host Premiership newbies Magesi FC in a Limpopo Derby on Wednesday evening.

The match comes a month after Sekhukhune and Cape Town City FC’s MTN8 clash, with some questioning the standard of the pitch. This is after what looked like white sand on the pitch showing during the match.

However, the manager responsible for Sport and Recreation at the Municipality, Manhlako Sebaka, clarified what looked like an unusual surface at the stadium.

“The New Peter Mokaba Stadium is ready. We have now completed the issue of pitch refurbishment, which started at the beginning of July,” he explained to FARPost.

“But it took a little bit of time because, under normal circumstances, we had thought before the end of July we would be ready. However, by now, we are more than ready, and the pitch is in perfect condition.”

“We had removed the whole grass completely; we call it silica sand. After that, we then put in winter rye grass. We don’t plant like your normal lawn at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

“The white thing that people saw is because we covered the soft cover. The other white stuff you saw there was what we call Silica sand,” explained Sebaka.

POLOKWANE MUNICIPALITY’S UPDATE ON THE RENOVATION AT THE SESHEGO STADIUM

“Seshego as well is coming alright. By October, I think if we agree with the PSL through Magesi, we should be moving some of the matches there. So we are good to go.”

“I must also indicate that at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium just yesterday, we were given a thumbs up by a match referee who ranked our pitch number three in the entire country. So bravo to my team.”
