How Owen Da Gama is finding life in ABC Motsepe League

Former Orlando Pirates coach Owen Da Gama has described coaching in the SAFA ABC Motsepe League as interesting.

Da Gama was recently appointed as head coach of Limpopo club Vondwe XI Bullets.

He has already begun his tenure and was in charge during the recent Nedbank Cup qualification matches. It’s not the first time the 63-year-old took charge of an amateur club in Limpopo. During the late 90s, Da Gama was in charge of a club called Mapate Silver Stars before they relocated and became Platinum Stars.

“Football is football, whether it’s in the PSL or NFD, it’s always my passion,” he told FARPost about the experience.

“So I really enjoy any division. It’s interesting, it’s a different kind of football. There is a lot more coaching to be done at this level, and that is good,” he added.

“In the PSL, you basically manage players, and you work on the tactical aspects. Here, you got to do a little more than that. There is a lot more coaching to be done at this level, and I am enjoying it. So for me, whether I am here or PSL, football is football to me.”

FORMER PSL COACH SHARES HIS PASSIO ON UNEARTHING RAW TALENT

“Well, I have been watching a lot of football. The only way to stay in the game and understand what’s going on is to be part of it. I am always interested in seeing raw talent, so it has always been my interest,” he explained.

“So I always go and watch these games, and it happened that Mr Siebe, the owner of Vondwe XI Bullets, asked me if I could come and assist him. There are two coaches there that I am assisting and helping as much as I can.

“It keeps me in the game, and I think it’s a very interesting project. I think it can go far because Mr [Phathutshedzo] Siebe is very ambitious. So I am sure something good can come out of this.”
