Arthur Zwane to join AmaZulu as co-coach in surprise move
In an unexpected twist, former Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane is reportedly set to join AmaZulu FC as co-coach alongside Vusumuzi Vilakazi.
This surprising development comes after AmaZulu’s initial pursuit of Magesi FC coach Clinton Larsen was seemingly blocked by contractual obligations.
AmaZulu’s decision to dismiss Pablo Franco Martin after a dismal start to the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season — three consecutive defeats leaving them bottom of the table — triggered a search for new leadership. Martin’s tenure ended with a disappointing record of 12 wins, 12 draws, and 15 losses in 39 games.
While initial reports suggested that Vilakazi would join as an assistant coach, sources reveal that AmaZulu have contacted Chiefs regarding Zwane’s services. This move signals a bold and unconventional approach, with Zwane and Vilakazi set to share the head coach’s responsibilities.
CO-COACHING STRUCTURE PRESENTS INTRIGUING DYNAMIC FOR VILAKAZI AND ZWANE
Zwane’s time at Kaizer Chiefs concluded in June 2023 after a trophyless season despite high expectations. Although his departure was anticipated, his potential appointment at AmaZulu as co-coach has raised eyebrows. After leading the first team, Zwane transitioned to a Senior Academy Coach role at Chiefs.
This co-coaching structure presents an intriguing dynamic. Vilakazi, who has been at the helm of Usuthu’s DStv Diski Challenge side since leaving Richards Bay, will now collaborate with Zwane, bringing diverse perspectives and tactical approaches to the team.
For Zwane, this presents an opportunity to reignite his coaching career and silence his critics. Known for his ability to develop young talent, he could potentially revitalise AmaZulu’s squad and instil a winning mentality.
However, the success of this partnership hinges on Zwane and Vilakazi forging a strong working relationship and effectively managing the team’s dynamics. Usuthu followers will be hoping this unconventional approach brings stability and success to the club.
Vilakazi is no stranger to the co-coaching setup, having previously shared responsibilities with Mabhuti Khenyeza during his time at Golden Arrows. The duo is expected to get down to work later this week. Their first assignment will be in the Carling Knockout Cup next weekend.
The KZN outfit was drawn against Stellenbosch FC, a match that will be played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. They will be looking to get off to a positive start together.
