Kholosa Biyana: From two-hour journeys to giving back

Dynamic Mamelodi Sundowns and Banyana Banyana midfielder Kholosa Biyana is certainly a force to be reckoned with on the football pitch. But her influence extends far beyond controlling the midfield and spraying passes like confetti at a wedding.

Driven by a deep-rooted commitment to her community, Biyana is making a tangible difference in the lives of young athletes in Mthatha, a region that holds special significance in her journey to success.

Her football journey began at the tender age of eight, fuelled by an unwavering passion and support of her father. “Living at boarding school meant I couldn’t go to practice on my own,” Biyana recalled. “But my dad never let that be an obstacle. Every single day, he would drive me to training and back, a two-hour round trip, without complaint. He’s always been my biggest inspiration.”

This dedication instilled in Biyana the importance of perseverance and the power of support. While she was fortunate to have a strong support system, she witnessed firsthand how many talented young athletes lacked the resources and encouragement to pursue their dreams. This realisation fuelled a desire to give back, to ensure that others wouldn’t have to face the same challenges she witnessed.

DETAILS ABOUT KHOLOSA BIYANA’S DONATION

Now, through the Kholosa Biyana Foundation, she is turning that desire into action. Her recent donation of 50 pairs of running shoes and Adidas boots to young footballers in Mthatha is a testament to her commitment. Partnering with Adidas for the ‘Lace Up For Change’ initiative, Biyana is providing tangible support to aspiring athletes in the region where her mother was raised.

The donation was specifically targeted towards participants in the FNB Football First tournament, a nationwide initiative that brings together talented young footballers across South Africa. A select group of 40 Under 15 footballers [20 girls and 20 boys] were chosen from 56 teams in the Mthatha area to form a team that competed against other regional select sides.

“Mthatha holds a special place in my heart,” Biyana said. “It’s important to remember where you come from and to use your success to uplift others. I want these young players to know that their dreams are valid. They must know that with hard work and dedication, they can achieve anything.”

Biyana’s generosity is not just about providing equipment; it’s about instilling hope and empowering a new generation of athletes.

BIYANA HAILED FOR INITIATIVE

“I’ve been involved with the FNB Football First programme for the past three years. I have seen the challenges these young players face,” she added. “Some come with shoes that are not in good condition, affecting their confidence. I realised there was a lot I could do to assist.”

Vuyolwethu Mhlathi, the assistant coach of the Mthatha team, expressed her gratitude for Biyana’s donation. “Those running shoes mean everything to them,” she emphasised. “You should have seen the joy on their faces. We are so grateful for her kindness.” Mhlathi also highlighted the long-term impact of the FNB Football First program, which has provided opportunities for young players since 2012, helping them gain experience, earn recognition from clubs, and even escape the dangers of drugs.

The 30-year-old midfield grafter represented South Africa in the 2019 and 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cups. She also played a key role in Banyana Banyana’s historic victory at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
