Janine van Wyk reveals long-term goals for JVW FC
JVW FC co-founder and assistant coach Janine van Wyk has revealed the club’s long-term goals following the conclusion of the 2024 Hollywoodbets Super League season.
The Blue Diamonds, as they are affectionately known, were established in 2012 with the goal of discovering, nurturing, enhancing, and showcasing the talents of female football players in SA.
Van Wyk’s team, based in Bedfordview in Johannesburg, started with just 13 players and has expanded steadily since then, becoming one of the best teams in the country.
JVW were promoted to the Hollywoodbets Super League in 2019 after winning the SAFA Gauteng Sasol League. They were ultimately crowned champions at the National Championships, becoming the first team to be promoted to the top division of the SA women’s top-flight, the Super League.
The club has been participating in the Hollywoodbets Super League for the last five seasons. Their highest league placement came in the 2023 season when they earned 63 points in 30 matches to secure third place, their best finish since their promotion to the women’s top division.
In the just-ended Hollywoodbets Super League campaign, JVW finished in fifth position with 55 points from 30 outings.
JANINE VAN WYK OUTLINES JVW FC’S LONG-TERM GOALS ON AND OFF THE FIELD
Van Wyk, the ex-captain of Banyana Banyana, mentioned that they aim to participate in high-level competitions like the CAF Women’s Champions League and support players in getting selected for the SA women’s national team in the future.
“On the field, we want to compete at the top level [qualify for CAF Champions League] and help players reach the national team and beyond,” the Banyana legend told FARPost.
“Off the field, we are working to grow JVW into a strong, lasting programme that inspires young players across South Africa.
“JVW is also looking for partnerships that make a real difference, like community projects and youth programmes. We want to show sponsors that their support can have a big impact both on the field and in the community.”
