‘This could have killed someone’: Mokwena’s graphic display exposes Moroccan game’s dangers
In a chilling display, Wydad Athletic Club coach Rulani Mokwena presented stones thrown at his players during a game in Morocco to the media, starkly warning of the life-threatening dangers faced by footballers in the North African country.
The South African mentor voiced his disappointment regarding the stone-throwing incident aimed at his players after Thursday night’s Botola Pro League match against AS FAR. Mokwena’s side played out a 2-2 draw against AS FAR in Kenitra.
Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Cassius Mailula started the game for the Moroccan giants and provided an assist. Wydad missed an opportunity to climb up the table to second place. The club is in position three with 23 points, just a point behind the second-placed RCA Zemamra.
Given the strong rivalry between the two teams, chaos erupted after the final whistle, as AS FAR fans hurled stones at Wydad players.
WHY RULANI MOKWENA BROUGHT STONES TO POST-MATCH PRESSER
The former Sundowns mentor, Mokwena, noted that he needed to condemn this behaviour, which he deemed unfortunate, even though it is considered ‘normal’ in a match of this calibre.
“It’s sad for me to bring these [stones] here but someone has to do it before someone loses his life,” stated Mokwena.
“We are rivals but we are not enemies. It’s sad that my players had to escape these heavy stones thrown at them.
“The spirit of football should not be around this Morocco is not this and I am very disappointed.”
He continued: “I was told that this is normal it cannot be normal that players play against an opponent that is very good and it’s a big club, it’s amazing club in an amazing country that is full of amazing people.”
