Kadodia on plans for ‘Maritzburg United’ name & Bryce Moon talks
Durban City CEO Younus Kadodia has opened up on the club’s plans for the “Maritzburg United” name and previous talks with Bryce Moon over its acquisition.
Maritzburg United rebranded to Durban City at the start of the season when the club relocated from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.
This was due to a dispute regarding the utilisation of Harry Gwala Stadium, necessitating the search for a new home venue.
Durban City are now playing their Motsepe Foundation Championship home matches at Chatsworth Stadium as they aim for promotion to the top-flight.
KADODIA ON BRYCE MOON’S ATTEMPT TO BUY MARITZBURG
During an interview with FARPost, Kadodia was asked about discussions previously held between the club’s management and former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Bryce Moon, who had expressed interest in purchasing Maritzburg.
He said: “I think the less said the better. Obviously there was a lot of speculation and I can maybe term it as that.”
“It was just all pure speculation, nothing materialised and obviously that led us to taking the decision to relocate to Durban and playing now as Durban City.”
DURBAN CITY’S PLANS FOR ‘MARITZBURG UNITED’ NAME
When questioned about potentially allowing the ‘Maritzburg United’ name to be used by another entity wishing to re-establish the club in Pietermaritzburg, Kadodia simply responded that it would be a matter for the board to decide.
“That’s obviously a decision by the board,” he added.
“The board still owns the Maritzburg United name so that will be a decision by the board when the time comes. I think we’re not actively looking for someone to take it over.
“The reality is that it was a sad day for football in Pietermaritzburg when Maritzburg United was normal.
“In a situation like that, ultimately the fans and supporters are the ones that suffer the most. The reality is that we served the community best as we could for over 23 years.
“I think the mantle is now up to somebody else to take over football in the city.”
