Patrick Mayo’s challenge to son Khanyisa Mayo

Former SA footballer Patrick Mayo has thrown a challenge to his son Khanyisa Mayo who followed his path in playing football.

Currently, Bafana Bafana international Khanyisa Mayo is playing his football in Algeria for CR Belouizdad in the Ligue Professionnelle 1.

The talented striker joined the Algerian club ahead of the 2024/25 campaign after parting ways with Betway Premiership side Cape Town City FC.

The 26-year-old didn’t have a great start in North Africa as he struggled for form. However, he started to improve by finding the back of the net most recently.

So far, after 17 matches in all competitions, the Bafana Bafana attacker has found the back of the net three times. This was against Orlando Pirates in the CAF Champions League and twice against ASO Chief and JS Saoura in the league.

PATRICK MAYO SAYS HE WOULD LIKE TO SEE KHANYISA MAYO BACK AT BAFANA BAFANA

The former Kaizer Chiefs striker-cum-defender says he would like to see Khanyisa back in the national team with Bafana Bafana.

Khanyisa received his first senior national team call-up in September 2022 after impressing coach Hugo Broos. He earned his first cap in an international friendly against Sierra Leone. To date he has seven caps to his name.

In recent times, Khanyisa has been overlooked at Bafana due to stiff competition. The last time he received a call-up was in October 2023. Other strikers that Broos has preferred include Evidence Makgopa, Iqraam Rayners and Lyle Foster.

“He’s a quality player; he has showcased what he’s capable of doing on the field. All he has to do is to be consistent in his performances at the club,” Patrick Mayo told FARPost.

“He has to push and he will be back playing in the national team, that’s where I would like to see him play; representing his nation.

“There’s no greater joy than playing for your national team. I’m glad he has been there, so it won’t be something new to him. For now, he has to push and work hard.”
