Gabadinho Mhango on how his move to Kaizer Chiefs collapsed

Centre-forward Gabadinho Mhango has opened up on the disappointment after his move to Kaizer Chiefs collapsed at the eleventh hour.

Mhango, who is now in the books of Marumo Gallants, was linked with a move to Chiefs towards the end of his time with AmaZulu FC in 2023.

The Malawian international – Mhango came close to signing for Chiefs during a period when the club desperately needed a centre-forward. With Caleb Bimenyimana and Ashley Du Preez as their main options and Bimenyimana’s exit on the horizon, Amakhosi were actively pursuing other strikers.

This pursuit was unsuccessful as Chiefs only signed one striker Ranga Chivaviro, who joined the club from Gallants ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Mhango revealed that he travelled to Johannesburg from Durban with hopes of completing the move. But things took a sudden turn as Chiefs appeared to abandon the deal at the last minute.

WHAT MHANGO SAID ABOUT HIS FAILED KAIZER CHIEFS MOVE

The former Orlando Pirates man briefly opened up to FARPost on the disappointment of seeing the move fail.

“It wasn’t just talk, but I was about to go to Chiefs, and then things turned around. Up to now, I don’t even know what happened,” Mhango told FARPost.

“But I remember I was at AmaZulu, and I actually travelled from Durban to Joburg to complete the move. I was happy that I was going to be at Chiefs, but then things happened.

“I was looking forward, but at the end of the day, I was disappointed as it failed to happen. However, I am loving the game and the place where I ended up.”

After his move to Chiefs failed, Mhango joined the now-defunct Moroka Swallows on a free transfer in August 2023.

When Swallows was disbanded, the 32-year-old joined Gallants on a free transfer this season. At Gallants, Mhango has been decent after scoring three goals and providing a single assist in 14 matches.

As such, he is focused on helping the team preserve their Betway Premiership status. They sit in 13th position with 15 points from 14 matches, seven ahead of Royal AM, who sit in the first relegation slot.
