Hunt speaks on SuperSport’s failed attempt to bring Maseko on loan

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has opened up about the club’s failed attempt to sign Mamelodi Sundowns winger Thapelo Maseko on loan.

The left-footer is among several players at Masandawana who have experienced limited game time this season following the departure of Rulani Mokwena.

He had joined Sundowns from crosstown rivals SuperSport at the start of the 2023/24 season. Maseko has made only seven appearances across the five competitions in which Sundowns have participated this campaign.

During the media day in Durban, Hunt admitted the club tried to bring back Maseko on loan towards the deadline day; however, Sundowns rejected the request.

GAVIN HUNT ON SUPERSPORT UNITED’S ATTEMPT TO BRING BACK THAPELO MASEKO

“Yeah, we tried for whatever reason; obviously, they hold the aces, and we can’t…you know,” said Hunt. “He wasn’t playing much, and so we tried to get him, and we didn’t get him. So, yeah, we move on.”

Instead, SuperSport managed to get The Brazilians midfielder Lebohang Maboe on loan until the end of the season, with the player seeking more game time. They also signed a Ghanaian winger, Enoch Quaicoe, and a DR Congo forward, Christian Saile.

Hunt thinks SuperSport did some good business in the January transfer window and is hoping the new additions will help the team kick it up a gear in the second half of the season.

SUPERSPORT GAFFER BELIEVES THEY DID WELL IN JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW

“Yeah, look, I mean, we’ve done well to bring in Christian, Samir and Lebo, obviously,” he added.

“So yeah, we’ve done well in terms of bringing in [players]. Certainly, that end of the pitch is what we need. Yeah, so let’s see. But now you’ve got to make this thing gel and work.

“As people can say, you can’t just put it together; it takes time. We don’t have time as well, so we’re going to try to get it going as soon as we can.”
