Rulani Mokwena’s plea to Wydad Casablanca supporters
Wydad Casablanca head coach Rulani Mokwena has made a heartfelt plea to the club’s supporters following a 2-0 victory over Hassania Union Sport Agadir on Sunday evening.
Mokwena’s troops moved into the touching distance of the second spot in the Botola Pro as they look to qualify for the CAF Champions League next season.
The Morrocan giants are currently sitting fourth on the league table with 36 points after winning 10 matches, drawing six while losing four times in 20 matches played.
And with 10 games left before the end of the season, Wydad are trailing second-placed AS FAR with only one point. On the other hand, the league championship is seemingly slipping away from Wydad Casablanca as they are 13 points away from the log-leaders RS Berkane, who are on 49 points.
RULANI MOKWENA CALLS FOR WYDAD FANS TO ALLOW GRADUAL GROWTH UNDER HIS GUIDANCE
Speaking to the media after the crucial victory in the league against Hassania Union Sport Agadir, Mokwena pleaded with Wydad fans to be patient and allow for the gradual growth of the team. Mokwena has now four games in a row in the league.
Before Mokwena’s arrival at Wydad in the off-season from Mamelodi Sundowns, the club finished sixth on the table last season and failed to qualify for CAF interclub competitions.
“Good question; I need to answer it honestly because I need to tell the fans and the people who are supporting the club to be patient,” Mokwena said when asked about his side’s progress.
“Let the team grow normally, naturally, and it happens in football, but because we have so many good players, the next step for this team is to dominate and win games like Wydad deserves to win games.
“At the moment, I cannot focus on winning the Throne Cup. I think we haven’t won it in 13 years or something like that. We would love to win it and we’ll do our best to win it. We will also do our best at the FIFA Club World Cup, but at the moment, I have to focus only on the short term.”
Wydad have been drawn against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City FC, Juventus FC, and Al Ain in the Club World Cup, which will take place between 15 June 2025 and 13 July 2025 in the USA.
Meanwhile, Mokwena handed Thembinkosi Lorch his debut after coming on as a second-half substitute in the match against Hassania Union Sport Agadir on Sunday night. Lorch joined Wydad on a six-month loan deal after falling out of favour at Sundowns.
