Why ex-SuperSport midfielder Jesse Donn retired at 25
Former SuperSport United midfielder Jesse Donn has revealed why he decided to retire from professional football at the age of 25. Donn has been without a club since cutting ties with the Betway Premiership side SuperSport in July 2024.
The central midfielder joined the Tshwane-based outfit in July 2019 from the Western Cape amateur side Ubuntu FC when Kaitano Tembo still coached SuperSport.
During his stay at SuperSport, he played 71 games across all competitions and contributed three goals.
To put a cherry on top, in the 2021/22 season, Donn was named SuperSport Young Player of the Season.
WHY DID JESSE DONN RETIRE FROM PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL
Donn mentioned that he chose to retire from playing football due to his faith journey, which God has guided him on along with his family.
He proceeded to state that he and his wife made a choice to remain in Gauteng to establish their family and opted not to accept any offers from beyond the Gauteng province.
“I guess I haven’t made an official announcement as yet, but this will serve as that. But, I have officially stepped away from playing football which I didn’t expect as a 25-year-old.
“It’s not something I would say I saw it coming. But to give some context, it’s a faith decision not a football decision or because of something that happened within the game, and it wasn’t politically motivated, injury, or culturally related decision,” said Donn on Power FM.
“But to put it simply and plain, God has been leading me on and now leading myself and my wife on and through that journey led us as a family and made a decision to step away from football.
“When my contract at SuperSport came to an end, me and my wife decided that we would remain in Gauteng and I was only considering offers in the Gauteng area. Unfortunately, a lot of offers within Gauteng seemed to dry up. I then started to get a lot of offers outside of Gauteng from the clubs I have massive respect for.”
Donn continued: “I didn’t accept those offers because we had made a decision to stay and build a family in Gauteng [as his wife was expecting].”
