Why Wolves coach is playing Munetsi in a forward role

Wolverhampton Wanderers coach Vitor Pereira has heaped praise on Marshall Munetsi, explaining his decision to play him in a forward role.

Munetsi has proven to be a versatile player since his switch from French side Stade Reims to the England outfit.

The 28-year-old ex-Orlando Pirates star has featured in three matches so far. First, he was a second-half substitute when they beat Blackburn Rovers in an FA Cup 4th-round tie in his debut for his new club.

He was again a second-half substitute when they lost 2-1 to Liverpool in a Premier League match. And on Saturday, he played his first full match for Wolves when they beat Bournemouth 1-0 in the league.

Against Liverpool and Bournemouth, Munetsi had been deployed as a centre-forward, away from his usual central midfield role.

Though he is yet to score, Munetsi is putting in one good shift after another. Against Bournemouth, he provided the assist for their goal, which was scored by Brazillian Matheus Cunha.

WHAT THE WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS COACH SAID

Commenting on Munetsi’s impressive work ethic, though in an unfamiliar role, coach Pereira said they signed the Zimbabwean international because of his physicality and ability to support both in defending and the midfield.

“What I’m asking him is to help the team as a midfielder and to appear from the back into the box,” said Pereira. “And he was again in a situation to score…but every time he appears there, he has a chance to score.

“But what I like in this player is the guy is the player that can miss a goal in the opponent’s box and then after 30 seconds, he is defending in our box.

“This is what we wanted when we looked for him. We wanted to find a physical midfielder who can support the other two midfielders.
