CT Spurs facing uphill battle to keep two highly-rated stars
Motsepe Foundation Championship side Cape Town Spurs are facing an uphill battle to retain the services of their two highly-rated stars.
CT Spurs are involved in an intense fight to survive relegation from the Motsepe Foundation to the ABC Motsepe League. The Urban Warriors have struggled to make an impression in the NFD after being relegated from the Betway Premiership at the end of the last season.
CT Spurs gained promotion to the SA’s top-flight ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, however, they spent only one season in the Premiership. The Cape Town-based outfit is currently sitting 14th on the log standings in the Championship.
They have won only four matches in the league, drew seven and lost nine times. They have accumulated 19 points in 20 games played in the second-tier.
The Ernst Middendorp-coached team has 10 matches left to make a real push to survive relegation to the third division.
As CT Spurs are fighting relegation, they’re also working around the clock to keep two of their promising players.
CAPE TOWN SPURS COULD LOSE SIVIWE NKWALI AND KHAYA MFENCANE
Spurs could lose right-back Siviwe Nkwali and midfielder Khaya Mfencane, as their contracts are set to expire in June 2025.
The duo have been frozen out of the Spurs’ matchday squad after refusing to sign contract renewals to stay with the club beyond the current season.
“Spurs have a challenge of trying to keep Siviwe Nkwali and Khaya Mfencane. Also, the players have endured a hostile treatment,” a source told FARPost.
“Both players have been absent from the club’s matchday squad, which tells you that the relationship has turned sour.
“So I can also tell you that Siviwe Nkwali is on the radar of Stellenbosch FC. If all goes well, you could see him in the Betway Premiership next season.
“I think the contribution of Chumani Butsaka and Ashley Cupido has made Stellenbosch want more Cape Town Spurs players.”
