Permanent deal in June? Cardoso addresses Suarez’ Sundowns future
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has addressed the future of Lucas Suarez, who recently joined the club on loan.
The 29-year-old signed for Masandawana in the January transfer window, penning a six-month loan deal that will run out at the end of the season.
According to the reports, the Brazilians have an option to purchase the Argentinian centre-back permanently upon the expiry of his loan spell.
Cardoso was asked about his assessment of the player and the possibility of him signing a permanent deal ahead of next season at Sundowns. He initially indicated that the matter was for the sporting director, Flemming Berg, and chairman Tlhopie Motsepe to address.
Nevertheless, Cardoso acknowledged his desire to retain Suarez beyond the loan period, commending his performances since his arrival last month.
CARDOSO HOPES TO RETAIN SUAREZ NEXT SEASON
“It’s a question of administration, of course; it’s for the sport management, Mr Flemming Berg and chairman,” said Cardoso after their 1-1 draw against Golden Arrows on Wednesday at Mpumalanga Stadium.
“Obviously, he’s a player that’s showing his value; we trust him like all other [players]. Of course, good players are the players you’d like to keep. Let’s hope at the end of the season, it’s a business that is possible. Let’s hope so.”
The left-footed defender has made seven appearances in the Tshwane giants colours in the Betway Premiership so far.
He netted his first goal for Sundowns in a league clash against Sekhukhune United on 1 March at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, contributing to the club’s 4-2 victory.
In his appearances, he has formed defensive partnerships with Malibongwe Khoza, Mosa Lebusa, and Grant Kekana, creating significant competition for defensive roles.
Out of the seven games he has played, he has helped the 2026 CAF Champions Leaguw winners keep three clean-sheets.
