Kenya Federation sets the record straight on Benni McCarthy salary

The Football Kenya Federation [FKF] has set the record straight on the salary of the newly appointed Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy. Reports indicated that the Bafana Bafana record goalscorer was set to earn Ksh8 million [R1.1 million] monthly.

Many Kenyans want to know the former Manchester United forward coach’s monthly earnings. FKF Head of Communications Jeff Kinyanjui took to his X account to refute the claims.

“There have been false reports claiming Benni McCarthy will be earning Ksh8 million [R1.1 million] a month. To be clear, this is inaccurate,” reads part of Kinyanjui’s post.

Kinyanjui further stated that the government funds the former Cape Town City FC coach’s salary, which the Salaries and Remuneration Commission regulates.

He added that the reported R1.1 million exceeds the total of the entire technical staff. McCarthy will work with former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs, assistant coach Vasili Manousakis and performance analyst Pilela Maposa.

WHAT FKF SAID ABOUT BENNI MCCARTHY’S SALARY

“The coach’s salary is paid by the government and falls under the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) guidelines. Even the entire technical bench does not earn such an amount collectively,” he added.

Kinyanjui expressed concerns that journalists do not always verify the information they publish, emphasising the importance of accurate reporting to prevent the spread of misinformation to the public.

“Let’s uphold responsible reporting and avoid misleading the public. Spreading misinformation not only misguides fans but also distracts from the real work of supporting our national team. Let’s focus on facts and back the team constructively,” he concluded.

While FKF dismissed the reported salary, they did not disclose the exact amount the coach earns, leaving the door open for speculation. The UEFA Champions League winner, McCarthy, signed a two-year deal with FKF and was unveiled earlier this week. He replaces Francis Kimanzi, who had been appointed on an interim basis after Engin Firat was shown the door.

The Cape Town-born mentor and his goalkeeper coach, Josephs, attended the FKF Premier League match between Gor Mahia and Kariobangi Sharks, accompanied by FKF officials.
