Late drama as Chiefs book Nedbank Cup semifinal spot

Kaizer Chiefs booked a spot in the Nedbank Cup semifinal in dramatic fashion after defeating Stellenbosch FC 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Inacio Miguel, Pule Mmodi, and Mfundo Vilakazi scored the crucial goals for the Chiefs, keeping their dream of winning a trophy alive.

Chiefs scored the second goal through Mmodi, who looked to have fouled the goalkeeper late in the second-half before Vilakazi put the icing on the cake with a third goal.

The Kaizer Motaung-owned team last won a major trophy in SA’s top flight when they clinched the league title and MTN8 in the 2014/15 season.

Chiefs took a long trip from Gauteng to Eastern Cape to face Stellies, looking to book a spot in the semifinal of the Nedbank Cup.

The Glamour Boys defeated Free Agents FC in the first round of the Nedbank before beating Chippa United in the Last 16.

In a quarterfinal encounter against Stellenbosch, Chiefs created the best chances in the opening minutes, making their intentions of wanting to win the match clear.

On the stroke of half-time, the Winelands-based side came close to finding an equalising goal from Ashley Cupido, but his shot went inches wide. The Soweto giants held on to their lead to go into the half-time break leading 1-0, leaving Stellenbosch with a big task of turning the scoreline in the second-half.

Stellenbosch began the second stanza on the front foot, searching for an important goal to bring the score back to level terms.

The 2023 Carling Knockout Cup champions scored a goal through Andre De Jong in the 86th minute. On the other hand, Chiefs scored two quick goals from Mmodi and Vilakazi in the 90th minute.
