AmaZulu FC rope in former Sundowns coach

AmaZulu FC have roped in former Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper coach Wendell Robinson, adding the much-needed experience in Arthur Zwane‘s technical team.

Usuthu announced the arrival of Robinson following the resignation of Aubrey Vilakazi who was promoted to the first team last year.

Prior to having a stint with the Betway Premiership side, Vilakazi was in the club’s reserve team and he has cited ‘personal reasons’ for stepping down with immediate effect at AmaZulu.

Interestingly, the goalkeeper coach is the third coach to leave the KZN-based side in the past few weeks. In a shocking move a few weeks ago, Vusumuzi Vilakazi also resigned from his role as the co-coach at AmaZulu.

‘Kanu’ as he’s famously known, parted ways with AmaZulu, stating ‘personal reasons’ for his abrupt departure at the club. Vilakazi and Zwane were appointed as the joint head coaches in October 2024 following the sacking of Pablo Franco Martin.

The exit of the former Richards Bay FC coach opened the door for the ex-Kaizer mentor to lead the team as a sole head coach. In addition, AmaZulu also recently lost performance analyst Pilela Maposa who joined Benni McCarthy in the Kenyan national team.

Meanwhile, Wendell Robinson is joining the Sandile Zungu-owned team after parting ways with the Brazilians at the end of last year.

The 52-year-old is bringing a vast of experience at AmaZulu after spending over a decade with Sundowns and won major trophies including the 2016 CAF Champions League title.

“AmaZulu Football Club has accepted the resignation of Goalkeeper Coach Aubrey Vilakazi, who is stepping down with immediate effect due to personal reasons,” AmaZulu said in a statement.

“Vilakazi was promoted to first-team goalkeeper coach last year after previously serving with the reserve team. The club expresses its gratitude for his dedication and contributions during his tenure and wishes him success in his future endeavors.

“Following his departure, the club has appointed Wendell Robinson as the new Goalkeeper Coach. Robinson brings extensive experience to the role, having previously worked with Mamelodi Sundowns and the South African national team.”
