Spurs relegation battle take turn for worse, JDR make promotion push
Cape Town Spurs’ battle to survive relegation in the Motsepe Foundation Championship took a turn for worse following a defeat to Venda FC while JDR Stars are making a real push for promotion to the Betway Premiership.
The Cape Town-based side suffered a 2-1 defeat to another relegation-threatened team Venda FC at Thohoyandou Stadium on Tuesday.
CT Spurs are struggling to impose themselves and move off the drop zone with only nine matches left before the end of the season.
At the start of the campaign, Spurs were looking push for automatic promotion back to the SA’s top-flight after being relegated from the Premiership last season.
The Urban Warriors are sitting 15th on the log standings in the NFD with 19 points after winning four games, drawing seven while losing 10 times in 21 league outings.
Elsewhere, JDR Stars have established themselves as real contenders for winning the Championship title after beating AmaTuks 1-0 at Soshanguve Giant Stadium on Tuesday.
JDR STARS CLIMB TO THE SECOND SPOT
After a victory over the University of Pretoria, JDR Stars moved into the top three with 36 points, closing the gap on log leaders Durban City FC who are on 41 points.
Meanwhile, Kruger United collected maximum points after claiming a 2-0 victory over Baroka FC at KaNyamazane Stadium on Tuesday. Kruger dented Baroka’s aspirations of winning the league as they are occupying seventh position on the table with 33 points.
In 21 matches played in the league, the Limpopo-based side won seven games, drew eight and suffered defeats on six occasions. Baroka are 13 points away from Durban City who are sitting at the summit of the log.
