Benson Mhlongo opens up on CT Spurs move

Cape Town Spurs assistant coach Benson Mhlongo has explained his move to the Motsepe Foundation Championship club and their battle to move out of the relegation zone.

Mhlongo was recently appointed as a replacement for Vasili Manousakis who has joined Benni McCarthy at the Kenyan national team.

The former Orlando Pirates assistant coach joins the Ernst Middendorp-coached side that is fighting for survival in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

“Mine obviously is to assist the coach and to assist the players to perform. So I will do my best to help this team,” Mhlongo told FARPost.

THE URBAN WARRIORS ASSISTANT COACH CONFIDENT OF SURVIVAL WITH EIGHT MATCHES TO GO

With Spurs now fighting for survival in the national first division, Mhlongo is positive they have turned the corner. Spurs are now third from bottom with eight games to go. After the win against Baroka FC on Friday, Spurs are now two points above the relegation zone spot.

“We lost games because we lacked that fighting spirit. Now we have shown it and I hope the boys keep the fighting spirit because that’s one thing that was lacking,” he said.

“The games that we lost, we gave [them] away. We gave teams silly points, so we just needed to show the boys how to fight. So now we have got that, now it’s for us to prepare for the next games.”

Spurs still have to play the likes of Durban City FC, Casric Stars, Kruger United and University of Pretoria in their last games. They will also face Leruma United, who are currently at the bottom of the log.
