Former CT City goalkeeper finds new home in the USA

A former Cape Town City FC goalkeeper has found a new home in the USL Championship in the United States of America.

The USL Championship is the second-tier men’s professional soccer league in the United States league system.

And the league current table toppers, Detroit City FC, have acquired the services of former Cape Town City goalkeeper, Tatenda Mkuruva.

The Zimbabwean signed a two-year deal, with an option to extend by one year. Detroit City FC confirmed the signing of the 29-year-old goalkeeper on Tuesday night, while also revealing his jersey number.

DETROIT CITY CONFIRM TATENDA MKURUVA’S ARRIVAL

“Mkuruva will wear 16 for Le Rouge this season and has been training with the squad since pre-season,” the club said in a statement.

“Mkuruva has been local to the metro-Detroit area since signing with the Michigan Stars in September 2019. That was before the inaugural NPSL Members Cup campaign, where he would appear twice against Detroit City FC in his first season with the Stars.

“From there, Mkuruva became a mainstay at the Michigan Stars, earning and keeping the number one goalkeeper spot from 2019 to 2024, eventually becoming the club captain. While at the Stars, Mkuruva was part of the 2022 NISA League Championship winning team and the 2023 NISA League Championship runner-up squad.”

Before moving to the US, Mkuruva played for Cape Town City FC from February 2017 to January 2018. At CT City, he did not enjoy much game time, as he was restricted to only two appearances for the team.

He switched to Zambia, where he turned out for Buildcon FC upto June 2019. But he did not live up to his billing. As a result, in July 2019, he moved to Michigan Stars on a free transfer.

At Michigan Stars, he made over 100 appearances in the National Independent Soccer Association. Additionally, Mkuruva was at some point the Zimbabwe Warriors’ first-choice goalkeeper. He was the first choice at the 2017 AFCON finals in Gabon.
