Why Chiefs star Lilepo hasn’t yet reached his full potential

Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has explained why he believes winger Glody Lilepo can do more than what he has shown since he arrived at the Soweto giants.

Lilepo has made a huge impact at Amakhosi since he joined the club during the January transfer window period from French third-tier side Valenciennes.

The 27-year-old has already scored five goals in the 18 matches that he has played in all competitions. His goal against Marumo Gallants was voted the Betway Premiership goal of the month for April.

The Congolese was again on the score sheet when his side played to a 1-1 draw against Sekhukhune United at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday. With five goals, he is Chiefs’ joint top scorer with Wandile Duba.

Nabi attributes Lilepo’s untapped potential to a period of inactivity before his arrival, stating that improved fitness and team cohesion, gained through a full pre-season, will allow him to showcase his true abilities.

“We feel that he is a player who has not reached his potential because before coming [to the club] he spent some months without playing due to difficulties with his previous team,” said Nabi.

“Once he reaches his full physical potential, because you can see that sometimes he doesn’t finish games. He will also get used to his teammates. When he has had a good pre-season, he is a player that can do more than what he does now.”

“He is a winger who can easily finish the league with 10 goals. He is a winger who likes to cut inside and score goals. Lilepo is a type of player who is always looking for opportunities to score or make his teammates score. We believe that he can even do more than that.”

Meanwhile, the result on Saturday means that Chiefs remain ninth on the log with only one game to play. They will host Polokwane City FC at FNB Stadium next Saturday.

Polokwane City are also fighting for a top-eight finish and are only two points above Amakhosi.
