Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou has offered an explanation for his prolonged and distinctive full-kit celebrations following the club’s Nedbank Cup final victory against Orlando Pirates 11 days ago.

The celebratory atmosphere among Chiefs fans lingered well into the week, with social media vividly capturing players like Zitha Kwinika and Matlou still fully immersed in the Nedbank Cup euphoria days after their triumph.

However, it was Matlou who stood out, extending his personal jubilant festivities in his full playing kit from the final on Saturday, May 10th, until he finally removed it on Thursday, May 15thโ€” six days later.

In a video, Matlou was seen declaring his intention to finally remove his matchday kit on that Thursday, having worn it along with his gold medal since Chiefs’ triumph over Pirates. His unique celebration concluded just 48 hours before Chiefs’ league game against Sekhukhune United last Saturday, a match they drew 1-1 in Polokwane as they continue their fight for a top-eight finish.

CHIEFS’ MATLOU RELISHES TROPHY WIN: ‘I’M IN THE HISTORY BOOKS’

Explaining his extended celebrations while addressing the media at the Kaizer Chiefs Village on Wednesday, Matlou emphasised the profound personal significance of the Nedbank Cup win.

“It was a great feeling for me, so I had to express my feelings, of course,” he stated. “It’s been one of those achievements that I was looking for as a player personally, so winning a cup with a brand like Kaizer Chiefs is one major achievement for me and for the club as well.”

He acknowledged the weight of the club’s decade-long trophy drought, saying, “It has been a while not winning a cup, so there were talks that 10 [years without a trophy] blah blah blah. But yes, I’m one player that is in the history books that I have won a trophy for the club [part of the generation that ended the drought].”
