Former Chiefs coach questions Mako & Monyane signing

Paseka Mako at Orlando Pirates

Former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Farouk Khan has questioned the club’s signing of Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane for the upcoming 2025/26 Betway Premiership season.

Mako and Monyane were snapped up by Chiefs on a free transfer after being released by rivals Orlando Pirates a few days ago.

Pirates decided against offering Mako and Monyane contract renewals with their existing contracts expiring on the 30th of June, 2025.

The two wing-backs were amongst some of the long-serving members of the Pirates squad. Mako spent seven seasons with the Buccaneers after joining the club from Chippa United in 2018.

In his stay with Pirates, the left-back featured in 173 games across all competitions. He scored two goals, and chipped in with eight assists according to Transfermarkt.

But in the last season, Mako had limited game-time at Pirates after battling injuries. Deon Hotto featured regularly in the left-back position under the guidance of the then-head coach Jose Riveiro.

Meanwhile, Monyane is leaving the Soweto giants, having spent five seasons at the club. The talented defender was promoted from the Pirates junior ranks in 2019.

WHAT FAROUK KHAN SAID ABOUT KAIZER CHIEFS SIGNING MAKO AND MONYANE

After Amakhosi moved swiftly to sign Mako and Monyane, ex-coach Farouk Khan says the two players are talented, but they won’t take the Glamour Boys squad to the next level.

Khan had a spell with Chiefs in the early 2000s and played a big role in grooming stars such as Jabu Mahlangu and Junior Khanye.

“If they were the calibre that could make an impact, why did Pirates let them go?” Khan asked in an interview with FARPost.

“When you are trying to build, you need to go get young players who can grow into the system. I think many teams try to save by not spending on transfers, but that has a bad impact in the long run.

“Take nothing away from the two players, they are very good players, but can they improve the current Kaizer Chiefs squad? Asked Khan.

“I think they’re good players, but can they take the club to the next level? I’ll have to wait and see. At Chiefs, you need players who can take the level of your squad higher.”
