‘It’s not necessarily a powerful agent’ – Skudu Makudubela after Angola move

Mahlatse ‘Skudu’ Makudubela has shared insights into how he’s managed to play in two exciting African leagues ahead of his upcoming move to Angola.

The talented winger has joined Angolan club side Wiliete Sport Club de Benguela ahead of the 2025/26 season, marking his third African country after leaving South Africa for Tanzania two years ago.

Makudubela had a stint with Dar es Salaam-based giants Young Africans before switching to the DRC’s AS Vita. When his Vita contract came to an end on June 30, Wiliete announced his arrival.

“Vita was full of challenges; honestly speaking, it was full of challenges,” Makudubela told FARPost in an interview. “But, you know, it’s one chapter in my career that I will forever be grateful to God for. I’ve learned a great deal. I’m thankful to have represented one of the largest teams in African football. Vita club is not a small team. It’s a big team with a very rich history.”

The 35-year-old is excited about his move to the southern African nation and is particularly eager to return to the CAF Champions League.

“I’m excited about the move to Wiliete Sports Club. Over the past two to three seasons, the club has been consistently striving to challenge for the championship and qualify for the CAF Champions League. This ambitious goal is one of the main reasons I am excited about joining Wiliete. Their ambition  influenced my decision to join the team.

“The CAF Champions League is where the best African teams compete, and it’s always thrilling. I’m thrilled to be back in the Champions League. I look forward to helping the team reach even greater heights.”

HOW MAKUDUBELA GOT HIS MOVES TO YANGA, VITA & WILIETE

He detailed how he scored such big moves, adding that it was not “necessarily a powerful agent”.

“It’s not necessarily a powerful agent behind these moves. When I transferred to Young Africans, the club had been monitoring me for quite some time. We [while at Marumo Gallants] faced them in both legs of the CAF Confederation Cup, during which they closely observed me. They reached out to me after my contract expired.”

His move to DRC came after Senegalese coach Youssouph Dabo courted him. Dabo knew him from their time in Tanzania, where he was coaching Azam FC.

“Coach Dabo knew me from Tanzania, and I rate him highly among the top African coaches. It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to work with him,” explained the man nicknamed Skudu.

He further revealed that the Angolans had been following him after an agent who works closely with the club introduced him. “A friend who’s an agent presented me to the club. They were very interested in my background and profile, and everything that came with it, which led them to bring me on board.”

Developed at Mamelodi Sundowns, the talented winger believes South African footballers could enjoy incredible opportunities across the continent and advises them to take advantage of these opportunities.

“South African players should venture into the continent and spread their wings. One thing that coach Pitso Mosimane said in one of his recent interviews is that he thinks South Africa doesn’t appreciate him. He feels like he’s being more appreciated outside. I share the same sentiments with coach Pitso.”
