Liam Bern travels to AmaZulu pre-season camp amid Spurs saga

Talented defender Liam Bern has travelled to the AmaZulu FC pre-season camp in Limpopo, defying orders from Cape Town Spurs to return to training as they prepare for life in the third division of SA football.

Last week, CT Spurs sent a letter to Bern, Asanele Velebayi, and Luke Baartman, requesting that they return to training to honour their existing contracts with the club.

While no dispute has arisen yet, the Urban Warriors face potential transfer conflicts with Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu regarding Velebayi, Baartman, and Bern. AmaZulu are reportedly close to signing Bern, while Chiefs are pursuing Velebayi and Baartman.

CT Spurs suffered relegation from the Motsepe Foundation Championship to the ABC Motsepe League at the end of last season.

As a result of dropping to the amateur league, CT Spurs are at risk of losing a handful of their key players, who will be searching for contracts with top-division teams.

The Cape Town-based side has threatened legal action against Chiefs and AmaZulu if they don’t follow the ‘right’ channels to sign the players in question.

Usuthu are believed to have completed the signing of the highly-rated left-back, Bern, for the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season.

FARPost has established that the 22-year-old travelled to the pre-season camp in Limpopo with AmaZulu, as head coach Arthur Zwane takes players through their paces.

In a squad list seen by this publication, Bern is part of the squad that also has new players such as Ryan Moon and Darren Johnson.

The left-footed defender was one of the standout players for CT Spurs in the NFD last season, having featured in 29 league matches.

If Bern’s move to AmaZulu materialises, he’ll vie with Namibian international Riaan Hanamub for the left-back position.

And what makes Bern a strong prospect for AmaZulu is his versatility; he can also effectively play as a left-footed centre-back or central midfielder.
