Basadien nears move to Sundowns amid uncertainty over Mashego

Fawaaz Basadien at Stellenbosch FC

Mamelodi Sundowns are close to finalising the signing of Fawaaz Basadien, while Terrence Mashego’s future at the club remains uncertain.

Sundowns have reached a club-to-club agreement with Stellenbosch FC for the Bafana Bafana defender. Discussions are also ongoing about potentially loaning Mashego, who has two years remaining on his contract.

Talks between Sundowns and Siwelele FC are still in progress, but nothing has been finalised yet. The potential hurdle of that deal is that Siwelele, who recently acquired the status of SuperSport United, has two enterprising left-backs, Neo Rapoo and Aphiwe Baliti, in their squad.

Both young left-backs are expected to stay at their current club, as they are not considered a priority. Rapoo, aged 20, had been linked to Orlando Pirates, and 23-year-old Baliti was on Kaizer Chiefs’ radar.

However, both players are expected to remain with the Lehlohonolo Seema-coached side. Additionally, negotiations continue for Lyle Lakay’s contract renewal, which would add a third experienced left wing-back to the squad.

WHAT IS THE SITUATION WITH FAWAAZ BASADIEN TO SUNDOWNS

Meanwhile, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso approved the club’s decision to re-sign Bafana Bafana’s left-back, Basadien.

He will compete with Zimbabwean international Divine Lunga and teammate Aubrey Modiba for the starting fullback role. Tiwani, who suffered an injury at the Under-20 AFCON, remains in recovery. As Masandawana approaches a deal with Aphelele Teto, Basadien could become their first major signing ahead of the 2025/26 season, just in time for the MTN8 next week.

The 28-year-old has been linked with an exit in recent seasons and was at one point wanted by Chiefs. Over the last two seasons, he has arguably been the best fullback in the league.

Last season, the former Moroka Swallows defender made 46 appearances across all competitions for Stellenbosch. He contributed 15 goals and assists, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists.

His impressive performances earned him a spot in Bafana coach Hugo Broos’ squad, where he established himself as a key player during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He was instrumental in Stellenbosch’s run in the CAF Confederation Cup as they reached the semi-finals for the first time.
