Aden McCarthy provides injury update & return timeline

Aden McCarthy on duty for Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs’ young defender, Aden McCarthy, has provided a crucial update on his injury, offering a timeline for his much-anticipated return to the pitch.

McCarthy missed the last two matches for Amakhosi in the Betway Premiership after sustaining an injury against Richards Bay FC at the FNB Stadium in Soweto last month.

Before his injury, the 21-year-old McCarthy was one of Chiefs’ standout players. He started the new season in excellent form, earning Man-of-the-Match awards in the first two matches against Stellenbosch FC and Polokwane City FC.

After helping the Glamour Boys secure two victories, the centre-back has missed the last two games. However, the Soweto giants have maintained their impressive start, remaining undefeated and keeping a remarkable five clean sheets in five matches.

In his absence, coach Nasreddine Nabi has opted for a centre-back partnership of Zitha Kwinika and Inacio Miguel.

At the handover of a multipurpose sports court at Phulong Secondary School in Kwa-Thema, Springs, on Wednesday, McCarthy revealed his return to training is imminent. The event, a joint initiative between the club and Nedbank, was a result of Chiefs’ victory in the 2025 Nedbank Cup.

On the sidelines of the event, the left-footed defender stated that he will rejoin his teammates on the training pitch this week. This will mark his return to training with the Glamour Boys for the first time since his injury.

“I’m resuming training with the team this week, and I should be back very soon,” McCarthy briefly answered when asked about his injury.

Meanwhile, the 2025 Nedbank Cup champions have been dealt a couple of setbacks in defence, with Rushwin Dortley and Given Msimango yet to feature this season.

The two talented defenders sustained injuries towards the end of the previous season, having formed a big part of Nasreddine Nabi’s plans.

Dortley featured in 20 matches in all competitions in his first season at Chiefs after signing from Cape Town Spurs in July 2024. ย The Bafana Bafana international quickly won the hearts of Amakhosi fans with his solid performance at the heart of defence.

On the other hand, Msimango, who has been at Chiefs since 2023, having joined the club from TS Galaxy, only made 10 appearances last campaign.
