Malawi head coach Kalisto Pasuwa has heaped praise on PSL star Gabadinho Mhango, saying he is an exemplary leader to the nation’s budding football players.

The Richards Bay FC forward serves as Malawi’s captain, and for coach Pasuwa, he is a desirable model. Mhango scored twice for The Flames of Malawi during the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

First, they beat Peter Shalulile‘s Namibia 2-1 away from home at the Francistown Stadium in Francistown, Botswana, in a Group H encounter last Friday. The former Orlando Pirates man was the hero as he netted Malawi’s winning goal. He scored from the centre circle after spotting the Namibian goalkeeper off guard.

And on Monday, 8 September, he played a pivotal role as Malawi staged a dramatic second-half performance, clawing back from a two-goal deficit to force a 2–2 draw against Liberia in front of their home supporters at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

Mhango and Chawanangwa Kaonga scored the two goals to secure a vital point. Ayouba Kosiah scored both goals for Liberia.

WHAT COACH PASUWA SAID ABOUT PSL STAR, MHANGO

Malawi coach Pasuwa was impressed with Mhango’s efforts, saying he has been a desirable model to new players in the national set-up.

“That’s the instinct we want, quick decisions, awareness, and bravery in front of goal. He is a good example. He’s such a kind of player, and it’s not maybe the first goal that he has scored, like the way he scored,” he said.

“I saw one again, it was against Morocco [during 2025 AFCON qualifiers], he did the same thing again. So he is someone who has got a goal in his heart.

“So that is something that we are looking for in some of these players who are in the team to say, at times, they must know how to quickly look at the positioning of the goalkeepers when we are attacking.”

Mhango now shifts focus to the Betway Premiership, where Richards Bay FC are preparing to face TS Galaxy on Wednesday, 17 September. So far, Mhango has one goal for the Natal Rich Boys in five outings.
