Former Chiefs star opens up on recovery & lessons learned in rehab

Kgaogelo Sekgota in action for Kaizer Chiefs

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Magesi FC winger Kgaogelo Sekgota has opened up on his recent rehabilitation process after battling with alcohol abuse.

Sekgota spent four months at the Hope of Achievers Rehabilitation Centre, outside Polokwane.

It is the same centre that former Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana Lerato Chabangu was admitted to after facing similar challenges.

After concluding his rehabilitation, the 28-year-old Sekgota has now joined SAFA Limpopo ABC Motsepe League side Tubatse United.

This publication understands that the move to the SA third-tier league follows Sekgota’s departure from Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit Upington City FC. His contact at Upington has expired.

The talented player has previously battled with off-field issues at his previous clubs, including Chiefs and Stellenbosch FC.

But in an interview with FARPost, Sekgota courageously shared the difficult journey that led to his admission into a rehabilitation facility and revealed his confident belief that he has now recovered and is ready to restart his career.

“Obviously, my family, my partner, and I made an agreement that I must go there and reset myself,” he told FARPost.

“As a person, you do have challenges, and I have learnt from mine that I faced. My family never turned back on me. My partner never turned her back on me.

“So I am myself, and I am Kgaogelo Sekgota as people know. I am also just working hard to do what’s best for me and my family,” he added.

Sekgota also expressed confidence in his recovery and hopes his decision will serve as a crucial example for others facing personal struggles. He emphasised the importance of confronting challenges directly, stating: “I am fully recovered, and I also believe that most young kids will take an example by taking such steps if they have a problem or challenge in life. I believe that people will learn something from me that if you have challenges in life, you do have to face them and work on them.”
