The air in Johannesburg felt suddenly warmer for the Kaizer Chiefs Diski Challenge squad as they returned on Monday, carrying not just their luggage but the invaluable experience of an unbeaten, transformative 12-day tour of the United Kingdom.

This extraordinary voyage, a crowning reward from sponsors Multichoice for their record-breaking 2024/25 DDC title triumph. It is a historic 70-point haul, now vividly detailed by assistant coach Dillon Sheppard.

Speaking on the sidelines of a Twinning Project graduation ceremony on Wednesday at the Sun City Prison in Johannesburg, Sheppard painted a picture of a journey that was less about scorelines and more about fundamentally accelerating player development through immersion in the global football elite.

THE THEATRE OF DREAMS AND THE SHOCK OF WINTER FOR CHIEFS

Sheppard confessed that the initial allure was undeniable. The sheer “hype of coming up against a club like Man United” and the opportunity to train at Carrington. The world-renowned facility, with its “unbelievable set-up of a club with huge history,” served as a profound “eye-opener” for the young Amakhosi players.

But the learning curve was steep and immediate. The squad transitioned from South Africa’s familiar summer warmth to England’s challenging, cold “winter conditions,” facing continuous “cold, rainy weather every day” on pitches “very different” from home.

“You know, you could see Man Unitedโ€™s quality in possession, which made us spend a lot of time without the ball, which is something that we’re not used to,” Sheppard explained. This tactical pressure, however, was a vital lesson. It forced the players to sharpen their “organisation and structure,” ultimately leading to a morale-boosting 3-1 victory over the Manchester United Under-21s, where Chiefs successfully created chances “coming from a defensive structure.” Goals from Thulani โ€˜Touchโ€™ Mabaso, Naledi Hlongwane, and Ofentse Kgosana sealed the impressive win.

The educational value of the tour extended far beyond the touchline. The players were treated to the dazzling spectacle of the Premier League live, watching matches like Manchester City FC versus Leeds United at the glittering Etihad Stadium and seeing Leeds host Chelsea at Elland Road.

Sheppard described the “unforgettable experience” of witnessing their heroes play first-hand, noting it was “amazing to see the excitement on the boysโ€™ faces.” This exposure gave them a critical insight into the “quality of the Premier League” and the technical and physical standards required at the pinnacle of the game.

BEYOND THE PITCH: PREMIER LEAGUE IMMERSION

Chiefs’ youngsters also gained wisdom directly from football royalty. They shared a “quality time” moment with Amakhosi and Leeds legend Lucas Radebe. His presence on the pitch before a match drew “tremendous applause.” Later, they were hosted by former England goalkeeper David James at the Premier League headquarters, where he shared “valuable insights into the highs and lows of a career spanning over 800 top-flight games.”

Even the final two draws, a 1-1 against Leeds U-21s and a 0-0 against QPR U-21s,ย were educational. The QPR game, which featured former DDC rival and current Bafana Bafana defender Tylon Smith, introduced the Chiefs side to the “unsettling and difficult” format of multiple substitutions, forcing the team to find new ways to adapt their “rhythm” in adversity.

Despite the minor frustrations of not converting chances in the draws, Sheppard lamented they “should have had two wins”. The collective feeling was one of overwhelming success.

The emotional lift was palpable: “We had a wonderful trip, a great, unforgettable experience. “It has energised us to want to go out and do well in the DDC again and put ourselves in a position to experience this again. We really appreciate the support and everything we get from the club,” Sheppard concluded.
