All set for Thabo Senong’s move to Highlanders FC

Thabo Senong set to take over Highlanders FC

Everything is in place for Thabo Senong to be unveiled as Highlanders FC’s new head coach as the club gears up for Zimbabwe’s 2026 PSL season.

Senong, who has previously led the Lesotho national team and guided Singida Fountain Gate in Tanzania, is expected to bring extensive experience to the Bulawayo side. FARPost has it on good authority that Senong will land in Zimbabwe on Monday to finalise his move, with a two-year contract on the table.

In addition, he will work hand‑in‑hand with former Jomo Cosmos and Manchester City forward Benjani Mwaruwari, who will assume the role of technical director.

Mwaruwari had an impressive career in Europe, where he played for Swiss side Grasshoppers, French club Auxerre, and, famously, in England for Portsmouth, Manchester City, Sunderland, and Blackburn Rovers.

He then finished his career in South Africa with Chippa United and Bidvest Wits in 2014. In Zimbabwe, he has only coached one club, Ngezi Platinum Stars, in 2023, but was fired halfway through the season.

Club benefactor Wicknell Chivayo had advocated for Mwaruwari to become head coach, but the club leadership decided to place him in a strategic position instead.

BOSSO COUNTING ON SENONG’S EXPERIENCE IN AFRICA

The duo—Senong and Mwaruwari—will finalise their contracts in Bulawayo this week. Senong is expected to bring his own assistant and an analyst, with one Zimbabwean coach set to serve as second assistant.

The former SA Under‑20 coach has a big task of lifting Bosso, as Highlanders FC is affectionately known. Bosso finished the 2025 season in 11th place.

The Bulawayo giants, who start celebrating a century of existence this month, were previously under Dutch coach Pieter de Jong, whom Senong will replace.

It remains to be seen whether Senong can change the club’s fortunes, as they last won the league title in 2006, then under Methembe Ndlovu. Highlanders last won the Chibuku Super Cup in November 2019, and Senong will be expected to be swift in restoring their glory.
