‘I was annoyed with coach of Bafana Bafana’: Gayton McKenzie

Hugo Broos at AFCON with Bafana Bafana

Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie has slammed Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos for making controversial remarks about ‘not feeling the vibe’ at the ongoing 2025 AFCON in Morocco.

Bafana were recently eliminated from the Round of 16 in the AFCON after suffering a 2-1 defeat against Cameroon at Al Medina Stadium on Sunday night.

South Africa crashed out of the Nations Cup after conceding two goals in each half against Cameroon before Orlando Pirates forward Evidence Makgopa scored a consolation goal in the dying minutes of the match.

Bafana booked a spot in the knockout stage after finishing second in Group B with six points in three matches, while Egypt finished at the summit of the table with seven points.

In the group stages, Bafana registered wins against Angola and Zimbabwe while suffering a defeat against the North African giants Egypt. The Hugo Broos charges were unconvincing after conceding six goals in four matches played at the tournament.

Bafana’s early elimination from the AFCON came as a surprise after the team won a bronze medal in the previous tournament staged in the Ivory Coast.

In one of the press conferences, the Belgian mentor revealed that he’s not feeling the vibe in Morocco, claiming that the previous edition in the Ivory Coast served better entertainment.

SA Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie has hit out at Broos for what he described as insulting Morocco. “I was very annoyed with the coach of Bafana Bafana, you don’t do that,” McKenzie said.

“You don’t go into someone’s country and insult them like that; it’s wrong. He’s in the hotel. How does he see the vibes outside? We were on the streets, and we saw the vibe. He was very wrong, and I’m going to apologise to the Moroccans on his behalf for his utterances.

“You don’t insult people in front of the whole world, a country that has welcomed us with such open arms. The Moroccans have done a good job, and this is the best Africa Cup of Nations I’ve ever seen.”
