Stellenbosch FC and Richards Bay have agreed terms for the permanent transfer of winger Sanele Barns, as he inches closer to a high-profile return. The 28-year-old is on the verge of finalising personal terms pending a medical with the Natal Rich Boyz.
FARPost can confirm the deal is a permanent switch, bringing Barns back to the club where he first rose to stardom in the South African top-flight. Barns was a cornerstone of the Richards Bay squad during his first stint, where he became a household name.
His stats during that period were impressive. After 62 appearances, he scored 10 goals and provided 11 assists. His incredible run earned him a nomination for the PSL 2023/24 Midfielder of the Season.
His move to Stellenbosch in July 2024 was seen as a step up to a title-contending side, but despite making 68 appearances for the Winelands outfit, he reportedly expressed a desire to leave the club.
His imminent departure, after featuring 22 times this season, comes amid a period of transition for Stellenbosch. Following the exit of long-time coach Steve Barker, the club has adjusted its tactical approach under Gavin Hunt. With Barns reportedly unhappy in the Western Cape, the Stellies management sanctioned the move to allow the talented attacker to leave.

Interestingly, the club has also let go of Thato Khiba, who was seemingly excelling at the Cape Town club. Khiba joins Sekhukhune United on a permanent deal.
RICHARDS BAY WORKING FRANTICALLY TO FINALISE SANELE BARNS MOVE
With the South African transfer window set to close on Thursday night, Richards Bay is working frantically to register Barns. If all paperwork is completed in time, he is expected to go straight into the matchday squad.
Richards Bay hosts Golden Arrows on Friday in a crucial Betway Premiership outing and will be hoping to hand Barns his ‘second debut’. They are currently ninth in the Betway Premiership table after 15 games. This is after winning four matches, drawing six and losing five.
