Football agent Pontsho Madumo has given clarity on the confusion around Katlego Maphathe’s move from Betway Premiership side Durban City to Upington City FC in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Maphathe joined Upington City during the 2026 January transfer window from Durban City. The talented right-back has been with the KZN-based outfit for over a season after signing with the club on a free transfer in July 2024. Maphathe was a key part of the Durban City team that secured automatic promotion to the Betway Premiership at the start of the 2025/26 season.
After being promoted to the SA top-flight with Durban City, Maphathe struggled for regular game time and was also affected by the coaching changes at the club.
Durban City started the season with Gavin Hunt as their head coach before he was shown the exit door halfway through the campaign. Sinethemba Badela took over the coaching job, but he lasted only two months at the helm.
MAPHATHE IS ON LOAN FROM DURBAN CITY TO UPINGTON CITY
Following the sacking of Badela, Pitso Dladla has taken over the coaching gig on an interim basis as Durban City are aiming to finish in a respectable position on the league table.
The Farook Kadodia-owned team is currently sitting fourth on the log standings with 31 points after claiming nine wins, four draws, and six defeats in 19 league matches.
Meanwhile, Maphathe struggled to make a major impact at Durban City in the Premiership after facing stiff competition from Tshanini Falakhe and Kyle Jurgens. The 32-year-old defender completed a move to Bafana Ba Gucci in January 2026; however, neither club provided details on the nature of the transfer.
But the player’s agent, Pontsho Madumo, has told FARPost that Maphathe joined Upington City on loan for the remainder of the season from Durban City.
“Katlego Maphathe’s move from Durban City to Upington City is a loan deal for the remainder of the season.”
