Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns dropped crucial points when they were held to a 0-0 draw by Richards Bay FC in a Betway Premiership clash at uMhlathuze Sports Complex on Sunday night.

It was Sundowns’ second successive draw after playing to a 1-1 draw against Stellenbosch FC midweek. They remain second on the log, with 58 points, one point behind log leaders Orlando Pirates, who played to a 1-1 draw against rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby earlier on Sunday.

Sundowns made only two changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Stellenbosch FC during the week. Keanu Cupido was preferred at centre back alongside Khulumani Ndamane, with Bafana Bafana international Grant Kekana dropped to the bench. Teboho Mokoena was relegated to the bench with Jayden Adams coming in his place.

The visitors dominated from earlier on in the game and were the first to pose a serious threat. Defender Khulumani Ndamane’s header came close to finding the back of the net, but Ian Otieno produced a brilliant save.

Sundowns were dealt a huge blow in the 23rd minute after Brazilian striker Arthur Sales was forced out with an injury and was replaced by Monnapule Saleng.

The home side nearly caused an upset two minutes before the half-time break through Sanele Zulu, but were denied following a brilliant save by Ronwen Williams.

The two teams made no changes heading into the second half.ย  Richards Bay were the more aggressive in the second half with some promising moves.

The home side missed a glorious opportunity to take the lead with 15 minutes to go via Lundi Mahala.

Sundowns will now travel to Limpopo for yet another difficult encounter as they face Polokwane City FC at Seshego Stadium on Wednesday, 29 April. Ironically, Richards Bay’s next league match will also be against Polokwane City at home on 6 May 2026.
