SAFPU demands probe into ‘horrific’ Soweto Derby pre-match scenes

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates

The South African Football Players Union [SAFPU] has called for an investigation into the horrific scenes that took place a few minutes before kick-off in the highly anticipated Soweto Derby clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates on Sunday.

Chiefs and Pirates locked horns in the Betway Premiership at FNB Stadium, with both sides gunning for maximum points in the last Soweto Derby for the 2025/26 season.

The two Soweto heavyweights played to a 1-1 draw, going home with a point apiece after Pirates came from behind to score the equaliser through Kamogelo Sebelebele, who cancelled out Pule Mmodi’s opener.

After an eventful draw, the Buccaneers remained at the summit of the log standings with 59 points in 26 games. They have registered 18 wins in the Premiership, five draws, and three defeats.

On the other hand, Amakhosi maintain their position in third place, having accumulated 47 points, and are on course to qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup with five matches left before the end of the campaign.

DERBY DISGRACE: PRE-MATCH BRAWL OVERSHADOWS SOWETO DERBY SHOWDOWN

However, before the game, chaos erupted during the pre-match build-up of the Soweto Derby as a violent clash between team officials and Pirates security personnel overshadowed the festivities.

What began as a routine warm-up descended into a physical confrontation that required SAPS intervention to quell. The scuffle, which broke out directly in the Chiefs’ designated training zone, occurred while the Buccaneers continued their preparations undisturbed at the opposite end of the field.

The intensity of the brawl forced the Amakhosi technical team to take drastic measures, pulling their players off the pitch prematurely. The Glamour Boys were forced to abandon their drills and seek refuge in the dressing room to regroup mentally before the whistle.

While the exact trigger remains a subject of heated debate, reports suggest the flashpoint occurred when Pirates security moved to physically block a Chiefs official from performing a suspected pre-match ‘ritual’ on the turf.

WHAT SAFPU SAID ABOUT SOWETO DERBY BRAWL

Following the disturbing scenes that overshadowed what was meant to be a massive spectacle between Pirates and Chiefs, SAFPU has urged the relevant authorities to punish the instigators of the fight without fear or favour.

“The South African Football Players Union [SAFPU] notes with grave concern the events that unfolded prior to the recent Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. What transpired during the pre-match warm-up is both regrettable and unacceptable. Incidents of this nature are not only embarrassing to the image of South African football, but they also risk compromising the safety and well-being of players. This responsibility cannot and must not be taken lightly,” SAFPU said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Football occupies a unique place in our society. It is more than a game; it is a unifying force that reflects our shared values of respect, discipline, and collective pride. When disorder and confrontation overshadow such an occasion, it undermines the dignity of the sport and erodes public confidence in the structures entrusted with its stewardship.

“SAFPU believes this moment calls for more than routine reflection. It demands accountability, leadership, and a renewed commitment to the principles that safeguard the game and those who play it. A full, transparent, and credible investigation must be undertaken, and where wrongdoing is found, the perpetrators must be brought to book without fear or favour.

‘SAFETY OF PLAYERS IS NOT NEGOTIABLE’-SAFPU

“Equally, this incident should serve as a turning point- an opportunity for all stakeholders, including clubs, match officials, security authorities, and governing bodies, to reaffirm their duty of care and to act decisively in preventing a recurrence. The safety of players is not negotiable; it is foundational.

“We must be clear: the integrity of the game cannot be compromised by lapses in judgment or failures in responsibility. The Soweto Derby stands as a symbol of excellence and heritage in African football. It must never be diminished by avoidable disorder.

“SAFPU remains steadfast in its commitment to defending the rights, safety, and dignity of players, and will continue to engage all relevant authorities to ensure that this standard is upheld.”
