DDC title race goes down to the wire as Pirates edge closer

Orlando Pirates DDC players celebrating

Orlando Pirates have moved one step closer to clinching the DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] title following a 2-0 victory over Chippa United at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto this weekend.

The win on Saturday ensured that the Sea Robbers cement their top spot, though the champagnes remain on ice for at least one more week. Currently, Pirates occupy pole position with 72 points after 29 matches, holding a crucial three-point cushion as the season enters its final 90 minutes.

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns made sure the title race would go down to the final day after they secured a 2-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday at Dobsonville Stadium.

The Brazilians’ victory keeps them in second place with 69 points. While Pirates hold the advantage, Sundowns’ resilience means the race has reached a fever pitch. In fact, the Buccaneers could have been crowned champions today had Sundowns failed to collect maximum points against Amakhosi.

As it stands, Pirates need only a single point in their final fixture to seal the deal.

PIRATES HOST SUNDOWNS IN FINAL MATCHDAY SHOWDOWN

The 2025/26 DDC season will conclude on Saturday, 9 May, with a mouth-watering clash between the two title contenders Pirates and Sundowns.

The match between the Sea Robbers and Bafana Ba Style will take place at UJ Soweto Campus at 10:00.

On the other hand, Chiefs have suffered another setback. Their 2-0 loss to Sundowns marked their second successive defeat, following a similar 2-0 result against Stellenbosch FC last week.

Despite the two consecutive losses, Chiefs remain in fourth position on the table, sitting on 46 points from 29 matches.

With the final day of the season looming, football fanatics will be focused on the Pirates to see if they can finish the job or if the Brazilians will pull off a late-season heist.
