Mamelodi Sundowns have exercised their option to extend Terrence Mashego’s contract for another season, while Durban City FC and Stellenbosch FC are eyeing him.
Mashego spent the 2025/26 campaign on loan at Durban City after struggling to secure game time at Sundowns. The move proved a turning point for the South African international, who rediscovered his best form and became a key figure in Durban City’s successful season.
The left-back made 28 appearances across all competitions and played an important role as Durban City lifted the Nedbank Cup FC. Their cup triumph also secured qualification for next season’s CAF Confederation Cup, increasing the club’s need to strengthen and retain proven performers.
Durban City are understood to be eager to keep Mashego beyond his loan spell and are preparing to engage Sundowns in discussions over another deal. The KwaZulu-Natal outfit views the experienced defender as an important part of their plans for both domestic and continental competition.
Before his move to Durban, he had struggled to secure regular game time at Sundowns, a situation that ultimately cost him his place in the Bafana Bafana setup. Manqoba Mngqithi started him only three times at the start of the 2024/25 season, with the other four starts coming under Miguel Cardoso after he took over at Sundowns in December 2024.
However, his performances in KZN have helped restore his reputation and have attracted interest from other clubs as well.
STELLENBOSCH FC KEEN ON TERRENCE MASHEGO

FARPost understands that Durban City are not the only club pursuing the former Cape Town City FC defender. Stellenbosch FC have also emerged as admirers of Mashego and are keen to secure his services on loan for the 2026/27 season. Stellies coach Gavin Hunt, who worked closely with Mashego during his time at Durban City, is believed to be keen to reunite with the 29-year-old.
The Cape Winelands club are expected to undergo significant squad changes ahead of the new campaign, with Hunt looking to bring in fresh faces after clearing several players from his squad.
Mashego has reportedly been identified as one of the players Hunt would like to add to his rebuilding project, although Stellenbosch would prefer a loan rather than a permanent transfer.
Despite the growing interest, Sundowns remain in control of the player’s immediate future after exercising their option. The newly crowned African champions now face a decision on whether to reintegrate Mashego into their squad or sanction another loan move to ensure he continues to play regular football.
Sundowns have Bafana Bafana left-back Aubrey Modiba, Zimbabwean international Divine Lunga and youth international Thato Sibiya. National Under-20 captain Asekho Tiwani is also expected to return to Sundowns after a loan spell at Stellies.
