Chippa United have surprisingly cut ties with highly-rated defender Ayabulela Konqobe as they’re making adjustments to the squad for the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.
The defender-cum-midfielder has been key to Chippa’s plans in the past few seasons, leading the club on and off the pitch as a senior player. Konqobe has had three stints with the Chilli Boys between 2017 and 2018 before having a second stint during the 2020/21 campaign.
The former SA’s junior international rejoined Chippa again in 2022, and he has spent four seasons with the club, where he established himself as a regular starter under different coaches.
In the previous campaign, the 30-year-old featured in 26 appearances across all competitions, scored two goals, and provided one assist.
Despite his solid contribution to the club as they survived relegation in the last match of the season with a 1-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs, Chippa opted against taking an option on Konqobe’s contract.

The experienced centre-back will leave United when his current contract expires on the 30th of June 2026.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Cape-based team is seemingly embarking on changes in its squad with head coach Brandon Truter building his own team for the upcoming season.
Chippa United appointed Truter as the new coach just before the last match of the season against Chiefs, and the former Moroka Swallows mentor is expected to lead the club in the next season as they aim to improve from their 13th place finish in the previous campaign.
The Chippa Mpengesi-owned team will likely make several changes to its squad in the July transfer window, aiming to become a competitive side under the experienced tactician, Truter.
