Sekhukhune United have secured the signature of Bafana Bafana defender Nyiko Mobbie from Siwelele FC for the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season, FARPost has learnt.
The Limpopo-based outfit moved swiftly to land the experienced right-back on a free transfer after an administrative technicality and deadlocked negotiations brought an end to his stay in Bloemfontein.
Mobbie will officially become a free agent when his contract expires on 30 June. As previously reported by FARPost, Siwelele had every intention of keeping the defender and initially moved to trigger the one-year option on his contract. However, due to complex contractual technicalities regarding the option’s December 2025 activation deadline, the extension could not be legally finalised.
Determined to find an amicable solution and retain their star defender, the Siwelele management immediately opened fresh talks with Mobbie over an entirely new contract.
Despite continuous and open negotiations between the club and the player’s representatives, the two parties unfortunately couldn’t reach a mutual agreement on the new terms. With the contract winding down to its 30 June conclusion, the door was opened for outside talks.
A RETURN TO SEKHUKHUNE AFTER SIWELELE FAIL TO RETAIN NYIKO MOBBIE

Sekhukhune wasted no time in capitalising on the situation, offering a deal to bring the versatile defender back to a familiar environment. Mobbie previously enjoyed a loan spell with Babina Noko a few seasons ago, making his transition back to the club seamless.
His arrival significantly boosts Sekhukhune’s defensive options for the upcoming campaign, offering the technical staff a proven international who is equally comfortable at right-back, central defence and midfield.
The 31-year-old spent one season with Siwelele, who bought the top-flight status of SuperSport United at the start of the previous campaign.
Last season, Mobbie made 18 appearances across all competitions after his progress was derailed by an injury setback that also saw him lose his place in the Bafana Bafana squad.
With the transfer window only opening next month, Mobbie will begin a new chapter with Sekhukhune United, where he’ll be eager to regain his best form and return to the Bafana setup.
Mobbie will compete with players such as Shaun Mogaila and Tsepo Matsimbi for the right wing-back position as Sekhukhune look to challenge the league’s heavyweights for trophies.
In the just-ended season, Sekhukhune finished fifth on the log with 44 points, having registered 11 wins, 11 draws and eight defeats in 30 matches.
