Experienced midfielder Thabang Monare has officially drawn the curtain on his time with Sekhukhune United, confirming his departure from the club.

The 36-year-old leaves Babina Noko after two seasons at the club, which he joined as a free agent after being released by the Buccaneers in July 2024. His exit might come as a surprise given his status as one of the most experienced players at Sekhukhune.

A regular last season, Monare featured in 27 Betway Premiership matches, scoring two goals and made five appearances in knockout competitions. His departure coincides with Cedric Kaze’s imminent arrival at Babina Noko.

As reported by FARPost, former Kaizer Chiefs coach Kaze is expected to be unveiled as the new Sekhukhune coach after reaching an agreement with the club. The Burundian will arrive to start work without Monare in his plans.

That could create the need to sign a central midfielder, although there are already players like Thato Khiba, Lebogang Phiri, Sydney Malivha and Karabo Tlaka in that position.

In a brief statement released on Wednesday, Monare waved his goodbyes to Babina Noko, confirming the end of his playing chapter at the club.

“To the players, technical staff, and the management of Sekhukhune FC, I would like to thank every single one of you for the beautiful moments we shared together,” said Monare.

“Of course, we had our downs as well, but that is what made us stronger. In football, we never say goodbye. Until we meet again.”

MONARE TRIGGERS EMOTIONS FROM FORMER TEAMMATES

Monare’s former teammates at Sekhukhune leapt in to react to his goodbye message on Instagram. Keletspo Makgalwa remarked, “We will miss our fights,” to which Monare responded, “We will still fight.”

Babina Noko, captain Linda Mntambo, reacted with crying emojis. The two players are close, and their friendship dates back to their Cosmos days before they were reunited at Pirates and Sekhukhune.

Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner said, “Until we meet again, Desh my Desh,” while Phiri, Khiba and Vuyo Letlapa also paid tributes. Boitumelo Radiopane and Vincent Pule also saluted their former Pirates teammate.

Monare has been playing professional football for more than 15 years, underlining his experience as a footballer. Introducing himself to the football world at AmaTuks, Monare went on to turn out for Jomo Cosmos, Bidvest Wits FC and four seasons at Pirates.

He also enjoyed time with Bafana Bafana, including four appearances at the 2023 AFCON tournament, where South Africa claimed bronze under current coach Hugo Broos. The player from Mpumalanga leaves Sekhukhune, who have experienced players like Daniel Cardoso and Mntambo.
